The Northmen crew reunited, illustration I made for Joe Abercrombie's Last Argument of Kings, illustrated spansh version. The project includes Cover, Jacket and 6 interior illustrations.
This one is on the moment Logen Ninefingers reunites with his old team of northmen warriors.
For this illustration I had to imagine all the northmen and provide them with some "distinctives" elements. I remember I opened my notebook next to The blade itself when I started it, searching for some descriptions of these characters to make a list. And...surprise: there weren't any! just barely small signs, but it's not until Before they are hanged when West meets them when we have the first real descriptions. So it was some kind of funny/panic moment when I finished the first book with an illustration in mind with no faces.
By fortune, that changed and I could provide them with some personal appearances: Dogman has some blue clothes and a fox fur on his shoulders, as a sign of reasonableness and intelligence. Logen has a red jacket from The Union, but it's a mess: on a shoulder, partially destroyed, dirty...the old leader and now a stranger. I used leather bracelets, a small tribute to Conan the Barbarian. Black Dow has black clothes, yes, but also small pieces of animal skulls here and there; Tul duru, a bear fur. And, Harding Grim, his bow, arrows and of course the back to the "camera". And, a moment, are those in the background left area Three trees?
