Chaos in King's Landing

One of the illustrations I had the pleasure of making for "The Rise of the Dragon, An Illustrated History of the Targaryen Dynasty, Volume One" by George RR Martin, Elio García and Linda Antonsson.

This illustration shows the moment when the riot and chaos during the Dance of the Dragons is almost maximum in the city of King's landing. The population was locked inside the city, so they decided to take the exit by force. And this exit was a very particular one: the gate of the Gods, a very singular building with The Seven gods made in stone. It was a requirement to show this element, as well as Wat the tanner, one of the main figures in this rebellion. Wat assaulted Lord Celtigar residence, tortured him and finally cut off his head and a stolen horse to show it and lead the crowd to the gate.
It was quite difficult to show the identity of Lord Celtigar, so one of the solutions I found was to use a shield in the first line with the celtigar emblem. There are other little details, like the Balance of the Father which is unbalanced, the representation of The Stranger hiding their face in a way that could look like a pain gesture because of the situation or The Crone's turned off lamp. In general terms, this was a very difficult piece because of the scene itself, requirements and the location of the POV to show a whole great gate but also characters in action.
